What to Pack for Your Teen’s Cascade Expedition Camp

When my first group of teens arrived in Mexico for our adventure camp years ago, I quickly learned something crucial: the right gear can make the difference between an amazing experience and a challenging one. But packing for an 11-day expedition isn’t just about stuff – it’s about preparing our young adults for an experience that could change their perspective forever.

Beyond the Packing List: Preparing for Transformation

Before we dive into the actual packing list (don’t worry, it’s coming!), let’s talk about what your young adult is really packing for. The Cascade Expedition isn’t just another trip – it’s an opportunity to:

Disconnect from digital overwhelm

Experience authentic connection with peers

Challenge themselves in nature’s most stunning settings

Discover their own resilience

The Digital Detox Factor

Here’s something interesting I’ve noticed: the teens who arrive most anxious about being without their phones are often the ones who thank us most profusely by the end. Why? Because they experience what life feels like without the constant pull of notifications. They discover the joy of being fully present when:

– Rappelling into the mystical Cave of Swallows

– Swimming beneath the towering Tamul waterfall

– Sharing stories around a campfire under the stars

– Building genuine friendships without social media pressure

Essential Gear List

Now, let’s get practical. Here’s exactly what your young adult needs for their Cascade Expedition:

Clothing:
  1. Lightweight, moisture-wicking shirts
  2. Quick-drying shorts and pants
  3. Comfortable hiking boots or sturdy sneakers
  4. Hiking Sandals or water shoes for water activities (NOT Flip flops)
  5. Swimwear
  6. Hat or cap for sun protection
  7. Light jacket or fleece for cooler evenings
  8. Rain jacket or poncho
  9. Socks and underwear
  10. Pajamas
  11. Warm jacket for chilly nights
Gear and Equipment:
  1. Backpack or daypack for hikes and excursions
  2. Sleeping bag suitable for camping
  3. Sleeping pad or mat for added comfort
  4. Headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries
  5. Reusable water bottle or hydration pack
  6. Sunscreen and lip balm with SPF
  7. Insect repellent
  8. Personal toiletries and hygiene products
  9. Towel and washcloth
  10. Digital, waterproof camera (participants agree to unplug from phone usage except for specific times to check in with family, in order to get the most out of the camp)
Miscellaneous:
  1. Passport and/or identification
  2. Travel insurance information
  3. Any necessary medications and prescription copies
  4. Notebook and pen for journaling or taking notes
  5. Spanish phrasebook or language learning materials
  6. Portable charger or power bank for electronic devices, because we won’t have electricity at every site
  7. Daypack or small bag for carrying essentials during outings
Optional Items:
  1. Lightweight travel towel for quick drying
  2. Travel pillow for added comfort during transportation
  3. Deck of cards or travel games for downtime

Participants should pack light but ensure they have everything they need for outdoor activities, cultural experiences, and comfort during their stay at the camp. They will also be expected to be able to carry all of their own belongings at all times, so only pack what they can carry themselves, sometimes up  or down a steep hill, because campsites usually are not close to where the van parks. There are usually small stores available if they want to buy anything outside of the food provided for meals and snacks. It’s also recommended to check the weather forecast for the duration of the trip and adjust packing accordingly.

Parent Corner: Supporting Their Journey

As parents, our role goes beyond just purchasing gear. Here are some ways to help your young adult prepare mentally:

1. Validate any anxiety about unplugging – it’s normal!

2. Share your own experiences of connecting with nature

3. Help them set intentions for their journey

4. Express excitement about hearing their stories

Pro Tips from Past Participants

“Pack less than you think you need – but don’t skimp on the right shoes!”

“Bring a journal. Trust me, you’ll want to remember everything.”

“The portable charger was crucial for those special moments we were allowed to take photos.”

Safety First

While adventure is our goal, safety is our priority. All our gear recommendations align with our comprehensive safety protocols, and our experienced guides ensure proper use of all equipment.
