New Year, New Adventures: Setting Meaningful Goals with Your Teen

The air feels different this time of year, doesn’t it? There’s this palpable sense of possibility that comes with approaching a new year – and nobody feels it more intensely than our teens. While they might not show it outwardly, many are secretly hoping this will be their year to figure things out.

As someone who’s spent countless hours with teens in the wilderness, away from the constant buzz of notifications and social media updates, I’ve witnessed something remarkable: when given the space to truly reflect, our teens are incredibly insightful about what’s working in their lives and what isn’t.

The Hidden Cost of Digital Life

Let’s talk about something that’s become the elephant in the room: screen time. But not in the way you might expect. This isn’t about demonizing technology – it’s about opportunity cost. Every hour spent scrolling is an hour not spent pursuing a passion, developing a skill, or building real connections.

In our camps, something magical happens around day three of being phone-free. Teens start to notice things they hadn’t before – the way sunlight filters through trees, the sound of their friends’ genuine laughter, the satisfaction of achieving something challenging. They begin to see their digital habits not through the lens of restriction, but through the lens of choice and opportunity.

Creating Space for Real Growth

The key to helping teens set meaningful goals isn’t about imposing our adult perspectives. Instead, it’s about creating environments where they can:

1. Evaluate Their Current Reality

   – What activities make them feel truly alive?

   – Where do they feel most themselves?

   – What’s draining their energy?

2. Identify Their True Priorities

   – Academic goals that align with their interests

   – Social connections that feel authentic

   – Activities that challenge and fulfill them

3. Design Their Ideal Schedule

   – Building in time for what matters most

   – Creating boundaries around digital consumption

   – Making space for adventure and discovery

The Power of Peer Experience

One of the most powerful things I’ve observed in our adventure camps is how teens influence each other positively when given the right environment. When everyone’s phones are away, when everyone’s facing the same challenges and sharing the same experiences, something shifts. They start to see what’s possible beyond their usual routine.

It’s not uncommon for teens to return home with a completely different perspective on their screen time – not because anyone lectured them about it, but because they experienced firsthand the joy of being fully present.

Taking Action: Next Steps

If you’re looking to help your teen make 2025 their best year yet, here are some practical steps:

1. Start with curiosity rather than criticism

2. Help them track their energy levels throughout different activities

3. Support them in experimenting with small changes

4. Consider providing opportunities for structured digital detoxes

5. Look for ways to replace screen time with adventure and real connection

The Adventure Awaits

Sometimes the best way to start fresh is to step completely out of our usual environment. That’s why our 2025 programs are designed to give teens exactly that opportunity – whether it’s a spring break reset or a summer of discovery.

Remember, the goal isn’t to create a perfect schedule or to eliminate technology entirely. It’s to help our teens build a life that feels meaningful and authentic to them – one adventure at a time.
