Being ourselves. Like no one was judging us.

Victor, age 16

A moment where I felt connected to my fellow campers was when we were sitting at the camp fire just talking and being ourselves. Like no one was judging us.

Grutas de la Gloria

This trip was truly an adventure. Grutas de la Gloria is not an easy location to reach. It’s nestled in the mountains in the state of Hidalgo, and to get there, you must navigate some challenging areas and then descend a narrow switchback road down into the valley. But the drive is completely worth it to camp in one of the most glorious places on earth.

Our adventure consisted of camping and then hiking to different caves, pools, and the crown jewel, the heart of La Gloria, where crystal-clear waters flow out of the side of the mountain. This whole area is a beautiful oasis in an otherwise dry and desert climate. Thanks to the many hot thermal springs flowing out of the mountain, there are citrus trees, banana trees, and a lush, more jungle-like environment.

During the trip, the teens also got to learn about the local tradition of making barbacoa, which is an overnight process involving wrapping the meat in banana leaves and cooking it underground. This traditional method of food preparation was fascinating to witness, and most of the kids enjoyed the delicious results. We also made sure to have vegan options available for the non-meat eaters in the group.

The teenagers loved exploring caves, swimming in the canyon, soaking in the bright blue mineral-fed river water, and hiking across the park. The zip lines were also a fantastic treat for those who chose to do them. They enjoyed camping in tents with their friends and late-night conversations around the fire. It was a true bonding experience, and one that we will all cherish.

I felt a strong connection to my fellow campers

Anthony, age 18

All the stunning scenery made me feel a deep sense of belonging to the natural world. I also felt a strong connection to my fellow campers during team-building activities.

Grutas de Xajhá: A Magical and Rugged Adventure

Located in the mountains of Hidalgo, Grutas de Xajhá offers an adventure for the truly adventurous spirit! Our journey with Teen Connect Adventures began with a three-hour drive from San Miguel, taking us as far as a regular vehicle could go. There, our guides met us, loading our gear into their 4-wheel drive truck to continue the journey. The road twisted and turned through an enormous riverbed filled with boulders larger than a car. We learned that when the rains start in June, this riverbed floods, making the area completely inaccessible. The forceful waters rearrange the boulders, necessitating the annual rebuilding of the road. We followed the riverbed for about 20 minutes, then navigated another 20 minutes of cliff-hugging, narrow roads before finally reaching the palapas campground.

The campground was situated on a hill overlooking the river, providing a gorgeous 360-degree view of the river and surrounding mountains. However, this was true camping—no cabins, hotel rooms, or cell service, and the amenities were very basic. A small tienda offered snacks and drinks. There was a kitchen with local women who provided delicious, traditionally cooked local meals. Basic bathrooms were provided as well. We set up our tents overlooking the beautiful river.

The next morning, we woke up early to a beautiful view, enjoyed a simple breakfast, and then set off with our guides to the Grutas. The two-hour hike up the river was quite the adventure, involving multiple river crossings. Tennis shoes were recommended as water shoes wouldn't suffice for the rough terrain and climbing along the route. The guides led the way without looking back, so we had to keep up, climb ladders, scramble over boulders, and navigate steep ascents and descents with the assistance of ropes. About three-quarters of the way through the hike, we arrived at the mouth of an enormous cave, which we hiked through with headlamps and small backpacks for water and snacks.

Emerging from the cave, we scrambled down a steep hill with the help of a rope and finally arrived at the Grutas. The water coming out of the cave was a warm 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit), but the cold river water ensured we never felt too hot. The Grutas, nestled between sheer cliffs reaching high into the sky, featured a large swimming area and a smaller cave with really hot water perfect for soaking. We spent the whole day there, enjoying granola bars, fruit, and whatever lunch we packed in our daypacks.

Around 4 pm, we began our hike back to camp to ensure we returned before dark. After a drink and a hot meal, we climbed into our tents, tired and happy.

The next morning, after enjoying some cafe de olla, our guides took us up the river in a boat to the "island," which was actually a huge sandbar in the middle of the river. The ride was beautiful, with banana trees lining the shore and fish swimming around us. The teenagers enjoyed spending the day relaxing after the intense hike the day before.

This trip was special because in addition to being magical and amazing, The teens got to experience the challenge of pushing themselves physically in a rugged terrain with a very sweet reward at the end. It required teamwork, encouraging each other and supporting and being supported by their friends. A strenuous hike took us to one of the most beautiful places they have ever visited. While it required "roughing it," the adventure and beauty were well worth it. They said they cannot wait to go back.

Exploring Tolantongo: A Teen Connect Adventure Camp Experience

Imagine a place where adventure meets natural beauty, where hot springs cascade down mountainsides and caves hide behind majestic waterfalls. Welcome to Tolantongo, a hidden gem nestled in the mountains of Hidalgo, just a few hours' drive from San Miguel.

Our recent teen adventure camp to Tolantongo was nothing short of exhilarating. As we ventured into this expansive park, we were greeted by stunning pools perched precariously on the mountainside. The view alone was enough to take your breath away, but the real adventure lay ahead.

One of the highlights was the warm river that starts as a hot spring deep within a cave. It was an unforgettable experience to swim through the waterfall, emerging on the other side in an expansive cave. Yes, you read that right—waterfall, cave and bats included! The thrill of exploring hidden corners and encountering nature up close left us in awe. Inside the cave, there are several hidden rooms that only an experienced guide can uncover. The teens were delighted to see these hidden gems that most people who visit the park never encounter.

Across the river, we discovered the La Gloria Grutas, a lesser-known treasure of Tolantongo. These natural caves and falls were a bit more rugged and untouched, offering a raw and authentic experience. With fewer tourists around, it felt like we had stumbled upon a secret paradise. We waded through warm thermal water as it flowed across the path, soaked in refreshing springs, and imersed in the peaceful surroundings.

And let’s not forget the thrilling ziplines! Tolantongo also offers really cool ziplines that give stunning views of the park and river from above. The adrenaline rush as we soared through the air, taking in panoramic vistas of the lush landscape, added another layer of excitement to our adventure.

Of course, exploring Tolantongo isn't just a walk in the park—literally! The terrain demands sturdy walking shoes and a good amount of stamina. We navigated steep hillside paths and rocky trails, all while marveling at the scenery around us. Water shoes were a lifesaver, allowing us to comfortably enjoy the river and natural springs with their rocky bottoms.

As we reflect on our time in Tolantongo, we can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to disconnect from screens and reconnect with nature. It was more than just an adventure; it was a journey of discovery, resilience, and camaraderie among our teen campers. Whether we were challenging ourselves on the trails or simply soaking in the hot springs, every moment was a testament to the power of exploration and the beauty of the natural world.

I felt like I was apart of something.

I loved when we were driving and playing 2 truths and a lie, I felt like I was apart of something

La Joyita Adventure Camps

Nestled in the heart of Guanajuato, not far from the enchanting town of San Miguel de Allende, lies La Joyita—a privately-owned ranch that has become a cornerstone of our adventure camps. Perched atop a hill, our campsite offers breathtaking views of a lush green valley and the distant village of Jalpa. Here, teens embark on journeys that not only thrill but also foster personal growth and teamwork.

At La Joyita, our campers dive into a myriad of activities designed to challenge and delight. Horseback riding across the scenic trails, swimming in the refreshing spring-fed stream, and gathering around the campfire for stories and s'mores are just a few highlights. However, the true magic happens when we venture into the narrow canyon below, where the adventure truly begins.

One of the most cherished experiences at our camp is the hike down into the canyon. The cold, brisk water flowing from the spring is a rare treat in this high mountain desert climate. As we hike, swim, and explore the creek, the canyon presents a series of challenges—climbing rocks, navigating narrow passages, and scrambling up small waterfalls. This part of the adventure is more than just fun; it’s a powerful team-building exercise. Teens quickly learn that success in navigating the canyon relies on the support and cooperation of their peers. It’s an exhilarating process, where every step forward is a testament to teamwork and mutual trust.

The journey through the canyon pushes each teenager out of their comfort zone. The cold water, the physical challenges, and the necessity to rely on others help build confidence in their abilities and strengthen bonds with their fellow campers. By the end of the day, the sense of accomplishment is palpable.

After a day filled with adventure, there’s nothing quite like returning to camp. We gather around the campfire for a hearty meal, sharing stories and laughter as the sun sets over the valley. The cozy warmth of the campfire, coupled with the camaraderie of newfound friends, creates a sense of belonging and safety. As night falls, our campers retreat to their tents, tired but fulfilled, ready to dream of the next day's adventures.

La Joyita is more than just a camp; it’s a place where teens discover their strengths, build lasting friendships, and create memories that will stay with them for a lifetime. Join us for an adventure that promises not only excitement but also a safe, nurturing environment where every camper can thrive.

High Sierras: Above the Clouds – A Journey to the Sierra Gordas de Querétaro

Our adventure camp "High Sierras: Above the Clouds" took us to the breathtaking Sierra Gordas de Querétaro, specifically to the community of Cuatro Palos. Nestled near the top of a mountain, our campsite offered panoramic views of endless mountain ranges in every direction. On a cloudy day, the clouds float by below, creating a surreal experience where you wake up and look down to see only a sea of clouds. We were fortunate to enjoy somewhat clear skies, giving us incredible vistas that stretched for miles.

Upon arrival, we set up camp, and a local family graciously provided meals for us. Tacos, gorditas, and quesadillas made with fresh, local ingredients were a delightful introduction to the region's cuisine. The warmth and hospitality of the local family added a special touch to our adventure.

The very first morning, we woke the teens up early. Despite their initial reluctance, when we climbed the hill and witnessed the sunrise illuminating the entire mountain range of the Sierra Gordas, they were thrilled. The serene beauty of the sunrise was a perfect start to our day in this magnificent landscape.

Our trip also included a visit to Puente de Dios, which required a stunning hike along a crystal-clear river. We crossed multiple wooden bridges and enjoyed the cool, moist air between the canyon walls. Puente de Dios itself is a naturally formed rock bridge over the river, where the teens had the chance to wade and swim in the refreshing water.

Another highlight of the trip was hiking to Cascadas Chuveje, a beautiful and steep waterfall with a glowing green pool at its base. The lush surroundings, steep mountains, tall trees, and mild temperatures made this hike particularly enchanting. The teenagers relished the opportunity to connect with nature and with each other as they navigated the trails and enjoyed the scenery.

Throughout the camp, the teens had numerous opportunities to build confidence in their own skills and forge meaningful connections with their peers. The stunning views, delicious local cuisine, and the challenges and joys of the hikes all contributed to an unforgettable experience. "High Sierras: Above the Clouds" was more than just an adventure; it was a journey of discovery, growth, and camaraderie.

Caves and Cascades Adventure Camp: Discovering the Hidden Gems of Tamasopo

Our "Caves and Cascades Adventure Camp" took us to the picturesque town of Tamasopo, located in the heart of the Huasteca Potosina region in San Luis Potosí. Nestled in lush mountains, Tamasopo is a town brimming with mango trees and surrounded by sugarcane farmland, making it an ideal home base for our explorations of the local natural wonders.

Our adventure began with a visit to the natural area of El Trampolín, a river flowing through the community, adorned with hundreds of tiny cascades, clear pools, and little islands. The teens were enchanted by the endless possibilities for exploration, swimming, and relaxation. Around every corner, they discovered new rope swings and waterfalls, each one offering a unique thrill and a refreshing escape from the summer heat.

Next, we ventured to Cascadas de Tamasopo, a magnificent trio of large waterfalls. The park built around these waterfalls added to the excitement with rope swings, 12-meter jumps, and obstacle course bridges that tested the teens' skills and courage. The natural beauty of the waterfalls combined with the adventure park elements made for an exhilarating day of fun and challenges.

The crowning jewel of our adventure camp, however, was the day we spent exploring Puente de Dios, or "Bridge of God." This naturally formed rock bridge spans a river with water of a deep royal blue, colored by the specific mineral content from a spring less than a mile upstream. The sight was nothing short of breathtaking, and the experience of swimming through smooth rock caves, worn away by centuries of flowing water, was unforgettable.

As we swam through these caves, we observed bats nesting overhead, adding a touch of mystery to the adventure. Several waterfalls flowed into the main area, creating a scene reminiscent of a blue lagoon. The teens had the opportunity to explore hidden caves behind the waterfalls, testing their skills, courage, and teamwork as they navigated tricky passages. Our guides were instrumental in showing them how to safely climb steep, rocky areas.

Throughout this adventure, it was incredible to see the teens work together, helping and encouraging each other as they tackled each challenge. The experience not only pushed them out of their comfort zones but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and achievement. By the end of the camp, they had not only discovered the natural wonders of Huasteca Potosina but also built confidence in their abilities and created lasting memories of teamwork and adventure.
